Five Charleston event spaces with stories to tell

In Charleston, the setting is often as memorable as the celebration itself. The Holy City offers an extraordinary collection of venues that transform gatherings into experiences. Whether you’re planning a wedding, corporate event, milestone birthday, or intimate dinner party, the right space sets the tone long before the first guest arrives.
In this feature, we explore five distinctive Charleston venues, each with its own character and charm. One is nestled within a luxury hotel, blending Southern hospitality with modern elegance. Another pairs unforgettable events with the culinary prestige of a Michelin-starred restaurant. You’ll also discover a beautifully restored former church, a grand mansion that reflects Charleston’s storied past, and a venue high above the field at RiverDogs Stadium, where sweeping views of the Ashley River create a backdrop unlike any other.
These are more than event spaces—they are places where Charleston’s history, culture, and hospitality come together to create lasting memories.

Hotel Bennett: Distinctly Charleston
At Hotel Bennett, every ballroom gathering, rooftop or Observatory reception, and intimate Piazza gathering is designed to feel less like a venue and more like an elegant Charleston home—one where celebrations unfold naturally and every guest feels genuinely welcomed.
Whether it’s a luxury brand taking over the entire property for a multi-day retreat or a bride walking down the aisle surrounded by family and friends, Hotel Bennett has mastered the art of making every event feel deeply personal.
Corporate clients range from pharmaceutical and insurance to automotive. Many arrive looking for more than meeting rooms—they want an experience. Full-property buyouts, executive retreats, leadership conferences, and client appreciation events allow companies to combine productive sessions with world-class dining, rooftop receptions, and authentic Lowcountry hospitality.
“Our corporate clients are looking for an unbeatable location in a venue that can accommodate several hundred guests while still maintaining a residential, elevated atmosphere rather than the traditional sterile feel of a convention hotel,” says Conference Services Manager Caley Donovan.
That same attention to detail defines the hotel’s weddings. From welcome parties and rehearsal dinners to ceremonies and elegant receptions, couples can create an entire wedding weekend without ever leaving the property. The timeless architecture, refined interiors, and unmistakable Charleston character provide a sophisticated canvas, while the events team works behind the scenes to ensure every moment unfolds seamlessly.
“What sets Hotel Bennett apart is the complete guest experience,” says Catering Sales Manager Wendy Kent. “We strive to make every wedding weekend feel effortless, with our team managing the details so couples can be fully present with their family and friends.”
Throughout the property, thoughtful design celebrates Charleston itself. Murals inspired by Lowcountry marsh birds welcome guests into the Crown Ballroom, while the rooftop Observatory echoes the city’s hidden garden courtyards. Those touches, combined with personalized service, create an atmosphere that feels both luxurious and remarkably intimate.

Cannon Green: Where gatherings are anything but common
Tucked into the Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighborhood, Cannon Green offers a collection of distinctive spaces, anchored by an exceptional culinary program.
“One of our biggest selling points is our culinary program,” says Autumn Heald, Event Sales Manager for Cannon Green. “Guests receive the same level of care, creativity, and quality that has made the restaurant so special.”
That is because the culinary team that helped establish Michelin-starred Wild Common as one of Charleston’s premier dining destinations, led by Executive Chef Orlando Pagán, oversees Cannon Green’s event menus, bringing restaurant-level creativity and service to all celebrations. Many ingredients are sourced directly from Event’s Chef Casey Costa’s DogPatch Farmstead, ensuring menus reflect the freshest seasonal offerings from the Lowcountry.
The Trolley Room accommodates up to 150 seated guests and opens onto the Courtyard with the same capacity, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor flow for weddings and receptions. A custom-built tent for the courtyard is available through their partnership with Curated Events. Smaller groups gravitate to the front Garden Room, which comfortably hosts private dinners and celebrations for up to 50 guests, while The Overlook offers an intimate, chef-driven experience for up to 12 guests.
While weddings remain Cannon Green’s signature event, rehearsal dinners and welcome parties have become a cornerstone of the business. Corporate clients have also utilized the property for launches, meetings, and special events.
Another factor that distinguishes Cannon Green is its all-inclusive approach. Furnishings, rentals, premium linens, and tabletop elements are incorporated into the experience, simplifying the planning process for hosts.
“We pride ourselves on being a one-stop-shop venue,” says Heald. “From the first call to the end of the evening, our team steps in and helps handle the details so families and hosts can simply enjoy the celebration. We want every event to feel effortless.”
The result is a seamless experience where exceptional food, thoughtful service, and beautifully designed spaces come together to create memorable Charleston gatherings.

Our Place on 17: A Blank canvas for every celebration
After sitting vacant for the past few years, a beloved Mount Pleasant property has been given new life as Our Place on 17, a versatile event venue designed to accommodate everything from weddings and corporate gatherings to fundraisers and community celebrations.
Originally built as a church and most recently known as the Sweetgrass Event Center, the venue officially reopened this past April, offering hosts a unique combination of flexibility, convenience and charm. Located along Highway 17, its central Mount Pleasant location makes it easily accessible for guests traveling from throughout the Charleston area.
"Being newly opened, we have availability that many venues simply can't offer," say owners Dave and Jennifer Poole. "What truly sets us apart, though, is the natural light, the garden, and the flexibility to bring any vision to life. It's rare to find all three in one place, and guests feel the difference the moment they walk through the door."
With its many unique spaces, the venue offers the flexibility to host everything from intimate dinner parties to large-scale events. The adaptable interior can be customized with in-house partitions or enhanced through preferred vendors who provide draping and other design elements.
Outside, guests will find multiple event-ready spaces, including a covered, greenery-lined walkway that provides sheltered access from the parking lot to the venue. A hardscape courtyard with pavers, a newly turfed lawn, gazebo and natural grass areas offer additional opportunities for ceremonies, cocktail hours and tented events.
With a full liquor license and a growing calendar of celebrations, Our Place on 17 is quickly becoming a sought-after destination for both private and public gatherings. The venue welcomed its first wedding in August. Looking ahead, The Pooles say they plan to introduce ticketed community events, including live music performances and wine tastings, further establishing the venue as a gathering place for the community.

The Segra Club at Riley Park: Marsh views, ballpark energy
Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park may be known for its game-day energy, but The Segra Club easily transforms into one of Charleston’s most versatile and memorable event venues. Perched above the field with sweeping views of the Ashley River marshes, the space effortlessly balances sophistication with fun, making it an ideal setting for everything from weddings and corporate gatherings to holiday celebrations and milestone events.
Accommodating groups as intimate as 15 guests or as large as 250, the Segra Club offers flexibility rarely found in downtown Charleston. The venue comfortably seats 100 to 150 guests for weddings, while larger cocktail-style receptions, corporate functions, and holiday parties can welcome up to 250 attendees. Hosts can buy out the entire venue on a game day or utilize designated sections while sharing the space with other groups.
“The beauty of the Segra Club is that no two events look the same,” says Director of Events, Victoria Veserra. “We can host a corporate launch or goal party one afternoon, a wedding the next, and then a holiday celebration for 200 guests. The space adapts to what our clients envision while always delivering those incredible views.”
And those views are a defining feature. Floor-to-ceiling windows showcase both the ballpark and the surrounding marsh landscape. Adjustable shades allow hosts to customize the backdrop, highlighting either the marsh or the iconic field below (or both) depending on the occasion and time of day.
Food is another standout. An in-house culinary team works directly with clients to create customized menus ranging from elegant passed hors d’oeuvres to full-service dining experiences. Unique menu requests and off-menu creations are welcomed, giving each event a personalized touch.
The venue’s versatility extends to its setup options as well. Cocktail-style tables and lounge furniture groupings can be switched out for up to 20 banquet rounds, included in the rental fee, while linens and specialty décor can be coordinated through trusted vendors for a seamless planning experience. Also included: up to 120 spots in their private parking lot: a rarity for a downtown venue.
Add the ability to personalize the stadium’s massive video board with custom logos, photos, and messages, and the Segra Club becomes far more than an event venue—it becomes an experience.

Wentworth Mansion®: Savor sophistication
The Wentworth Mansion ® feels worlds apart from the city’s bustling streets. Secret gardens, grand architecture, and a setting that encourages guests to slow down and embrace the art of gathering, point to a place where celebrations unfold with intention rather than urgency.
“Guests arrive and immediately feel transported,” says Ginny Severs, Director of Sales for Charming Inns. “You’re in the middle of the city, but it feels as though you’ve stepped back in time.”
That intimate scale is part of what makes Wentworth Mansion® such a sought-after venue for celebrations. Rather than large-scale, high-energy events, the property specializes in highly personalized gatherings, from milestone birthdays and anniversary dinners to executive retreats, rehearsal dinners, and weddings.
In fact, the mansion has become especially popular for elopements and micro weddings, with many celebrations hosting anywhere from two to ten guests, with a cap at 50. Some choose to hold an intimate ceremony at the mansion before gathering with a larger group at a later date, while others take advantage of the property’s partnership with Circa 1886. In these cases, a small ceremony at the mansion can be paired with a reception at the award-winning restaurant, allowing guest counts to expand up to 75 while preserving the charm and elegance of the wedding ceremony itself.
The venue offers several distinctive spaces. The Grand Mansion Suite accommodates gatherings of up to 20 guests, while the charming Garden Room hosts up to 12 guests for intimate dinners or private celebrations. The Tack Room welcomes up to 40 guests and includes access to the adjacent patio for the hour preceding the event, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor experience.
Perhaps the most unique setting is the Rooftop Cupola. Perched above the mansion like a lighthouse, it offers panoramic views of Charleston’s skyline and church steeples. Best suited for elopements, private champagne toasts, or small ceremonial moments.
