Gather for Games

A gaming corner brings the family together
By Emily Shiffer
The holiday season is meant for gathering together with friends and family to reconnect. While turning on the television for football games and letting your guests veg out is often part of the holiday tradition, a thoughtful way to make lasting memories with one another during this year’s festivities is to designate a space in your home for board and tile games (like Mah-Jongg) and puzzles.
“Creating a dedicated space for puzzles and games during the holidays brings people together in a warm and inviting way,” says Elana Tenenbaum Cline, interior designer and founder of Carta Creatives. “It offers a cozy, tech-free zone where family and friends of all ages can unwind, bond and enjoy each other's company.”
She adds that puzzles and games provide moments of shared creativity and collaboration—perfect for slowing down and connecting in a season that can otherwise feel rushed.
“Plus, having a designated spot means everything stays organized and ready for spontaneous fun, making it easier to start a game or puzzle whenever the mood strikes,” says Tenenbaum Cline.
Tips To Create a Gaming Area
» Tip #1: Focus on location and size
Choose a well-lit, low-traffic area in your home, such as a corner of the living room, a cozy nook, or even a section of the dining room table.
“It’s important to find a spot that’s comfortable but out of the way so you can leave your puzzle or game undisturbed,” says Tenenbaum Cline. “Ensure the space is big enough to spread out—puzzles, for example, need ample room for pieces and sorting.”
» Tip #2: Provide comfortable seating
Good seating is key for enjoying longer game sessions.
“Opt for chairs that are not only stylish but also provide good support. Cushioned dining chairs or soft, upholstered seats are ideal,” says Tenenbaum Cline. “If you have a larger space, add a few poufs or floor cushions so younger family members can join in comfortably, too. Keep in mind that the seating arrangement should allow everyone to see the game board or puzzle without crowding.”
» Tip #3: Invest in organization and storage options
To keep things tidy, consider investing in storage solutions that can hold all your games and puzzles when not in use.
“Shelves, baskets, or a decorative sideboard can work wonders. If you’re setting up for a puzzle, use stackable trays to sort pieces, which can be neatly tucked away when not in use,” says Tenenbaum Cline. “Having a system will prevent the space from becoming cluttered and make it easier to start again the next day.”
» Tip #4: Create a cozy atmosphere
Set the mood with soft, inviting lighting.
“Overhead lighting is important for visibility, but balance it with softer light sources like table lamps or candles for a warm ambiance. You could even string twinkle lights for a festive touch,” says Tenenbaum Cline. “Don’t forget to have a playlist of soft background music to enhance the cozy, holiday feel. A throw blanket nearby can also make the space even more inviting on chilly evenings.”
» Tip #5: Add personal touches
Adding personal touches that make the gaming area feel truly special and welcoming.
“You might include framed family photos, decorative jars filled with snacks, or even a chalkboard to keep score for ongoing games,” says Tenenbaum Cline. “The key is to make the space feel like a natural extension of your home while also serving as a dedicated area for fun and relaxation.”
» Tip #6: Fully stock your game selection
Finally, make sure you have a wide variety of game and puzzle options, including playing cards.
“Consider rotating the types of games or puzzles to keep things fresh and engaging for guests throughout the holiday season,” says Tenenbaum Cline. ϒ
