Kiku Refashion is a small, purpose-driven business founded by mother-daughter team Nancy Clair and Susu Smythe. They’ve built a brand that brings together sustainability, cultural appreciation and community involvement by refashioning vintage Japanese kimonos into modern pieces.

Smythe, a practicing lawyer with a strong background in sewing, carefully selects the inventory of vintage kimonos. Clair, who runs a family retail business with her husband, manages photography, social media and operations. Their skills allow them to create thoughtful, high-quality garments that reflect both culture and artistry.

Kiku Refashion centers around the Japanese concept of “mottainai,” which emphasizes respect for resources. By reworking vintage kimonos into contemporary clothing, Kiku supports a sustainable approach to fashion that values minimal environmental impact. But, there’s a deeper meaning as well. Smythe said, “The Japanese made one garment at a time as opposed to mass producing. They passed it down from one generation to the next much like we would family silver. However, the art is being lost, which is why we’re trying to brin it back into the world as wearable art.”

Also prioritizing community, the business regularly partners with local nonprofits, donating portions of proceeds to organizations chosen by their team. It’s important that Kiku not only highlights the beauty of vintage garments but also gives back.

The duo’s ultimate goal is to build a niche business with a strong team and loyal customer base while continuing to share their appreciation for vintage kimonos, making these unique, handmade pieces a part of everyday wardrobes.
