How Smile Design of Charleston blends craft, community and a love of cars

If you ask Dr. Paolo Incampo what makes him smile, he’ll give you two answers: a perfectly restored smile—and a well-tuned car. Dentistry, like wheel-to-wheel racing, is a discipline of accuracy: every millimeter matters, every detail counts, and when both are done right, you see the results. One creates adrenaline; the other, confidence.

Dr. Incampo and his wife Kim fell in love with Charleston after a 2015 visit revealed a city rich with history, hospitality, and a more relaxed pace that felt like a breath of fresh air compared to Boston. Countless trips to visit their son at the College of Charleston sealed the deal. In 2021, they traded snow for sunshine and found a new home along the Bohicket Creek in John’s Island.

Finding Purpose in the Lowcountry

After a year in a multi-specialty practice in Milan, Italy, followed by many decades running his own cosmetic practice in Boston, Dr. Incampo felt the pull to open a private practice in Charleston—driven by a desire to bring exceptional esthetic dentistry to everyone. “It’s about offering the type of care I am known for—fair, compassionate, and tailored—not just for executives or celebrities, but for the hardworking people of the Lowcountry.” Opening the practice became his way of giving back to a community that welcomed his family with open arms.

Technology, Warmth, and an Italian Touch

Step into his practice and you’ll notice something: it doesn’t feel like a dental office. It’s bright, cheerful, and welcoming—an atmosphere inspired by his Italian heritage and the Bohicket sunsets near his home. State-of-the-art tools such as Cone Beam 3D imaging and Cerec scanning and milling systems for same-day crowns ensure efficiency meets excellence. Patients often comment that his slight Italian accent and calm demeanor put them instantly at ease.

Treating Patients Like Family—Because They Are

The guiding principle he brought from Boston is very simple: treat every patient as you would a family member. “Compassion, understanding and empathy—that matters most,” he says. “Whether someone has avoided the dentist for years or is finally ready to reclaim their smile, my goal is the same: judgment-free care that meets them where they are.”

What Makes a Prosthodontist Different

Many new patients aren’t quite sure what a prosthodontist is. Three additional years of advanced training allows him to focus on restoring damaged or missing teeth, full-mouth reconstruction, and aesthetic rehabilitation using crowns, implants, bridges, or a blend of all three. “Prosthodontists are often considered the quarterbacks of complex dental cases,” explains Dr. Incampo. “We coordinate seamlessly with oral surgeons, orthodontists, periodontists and endodontists to ensure the whole plan works harmoniously—functionally and esthetically.”

Where Prosthodontics Meets Orthodontics

Smile Design of Charleston is the only practice in the Lowcountry to house both a prosthodontist and an orthodontist under one roof. With Dr. Grosso—an expert with more than 30 years of experience, patients can receive braces, Invisalign, TMJ treatment, and sleep apnea therapy on site. “It’s convenient and truly complements prosthodontics, especially for those seeking a comprehensive cosmetic transformation.”

On the Water, In the Kitchen, and Occasionally at 150 mph

Away from the office, Dr. Incampo and his family embrace everything Charleston has to offer, from boating and crabbing to cooking homemade pizza for friends, and being involved in community endeavors. His favorite escape? The racetrack.

But whether he’s behind the wheel or in his office, Dr. Incampo has the same mission: balance passion with precision—and always give people a reason to smile.

Smile Design of Charleston offers complimentary cosmetic consultations/smile makeovers (a $500 value) and complimentary Invisalign consultations (a $575 value).
